Cloud exit is a financial and operational decision, not a slogan. The goal is
to leave managed RDS pricing without discarding high availability, backup,
observability, and accountable support.

## The decision path

1. **Model the current workload.** Compare like-for-like compute, memory,
storage, topology, and payment terms over a three-year horizon.
2. **Recover the guarantees.** Map every managed-service promise to a tested
self-hosted control: failover, point-in-time recovery, monitoring, upgrades,
   and incident response.
3. **Migrate in stages.** Rehearse, shadow, cut over, and retain a rollback path
until the new system has proved itself.
4. **Operate with ownership.** Keep the data, automation, observability, and
skills inside your own boundary; buy expert assurance where it is useful.
